Application Guide for Postgraduate Programs for

International Students

(Updated in Dec., 2023)


Full-time postgraduate education at Chongqing University:

· Duration of programs: 2-3 years for Master’s degree; 4 years for Ph.D. degree.

· Language of instruction: Chinese / English.


ELIGIBILITY

1. Non-Chinese citizen with valid passport.

2. In good physical and mental health; in excellent academic standing and with good conduct; abide by the laws and decrees of China and comply with rules and regulations of Chongqing University.

3. Education & Age Requirements:

 Self-support: Ph.D. degree applicants shall be a Master’s degree holder, under 45 years old. Master’s degree applicants shall be a bachelor’s degree holder, under 40 years old;

 Scholarship: Ph.D. degree applicants shall be a Master’s degree holder, under 40 years old. Master’s degree applicants shall be a bachelor’s degree holder, under 35 years old.

4. Not be recipients of any other scholarships at the same time.

APPLICATION MATERIALS

1. Personal information page of passport. The passport shall have a minimum validity of one year. For applicants who are already in China, a photocopy of Visa or Residence Permit with entry customs stamps should be provided as well.

2. Notarized Highest Degree Certificate. Master’s degree applicants shall submit Bachelor’s graduation certificate and degree diploma. Ph.D. degree applicants shall submit Master’s graduation certificate and degree diploma. Prospective diploma recipients shall submit a pre-graduation certificate issued by the university, and bring the official degree diploma for registration if admitted, otherwise the admission qualification will be cancelled.  

3. Academic transcripts (from the undergraduate program onwards). Copies of academic records from first to last semester during the undergraduate, graduate (if any), and doctoral programs (if any) shall be provided. These transcripts shall be issued and sealed by the attending university’s academic affairs office, graduate school, or student management department.

4. Proof of language proficiency.

1) Applicants for English-taught programs and whose native language is not English need to provide score report of English language proficiency test (a score above IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL Internet-based 80 or equivalent), or a certificate from former university proving that the previous degree is taught in English, or a certificate indicating the applicants have studied in an English-speaking country for more than one year;

2) Applicants for Chinese-taught programs need to provide score report of HSK level 5 (180) or other Chinese language proficiency proof. Some programs require HSK 6 or above, see the program list for details.

5. Two academic recommendation letters in English or Chinese from professors or associate professors with their signatures and contact information, introducing the academic or research background of the applicant.

6. Physical examination form (Click to download).The form shall be filled by the physician in Chinese or English. Attachments of examination results (Blood report, Electrocardiograph and Chest X-ray report) shall also be uploaded. The medical examinations must cover all the items listed in the form with a suggestion filled by the doctor. Incomplete records or those without the signature of the attending physician, the official stamp of the hospital or a sealed photograph of the applicants are invalid. Please carefully plan your physical examination schedule as the result is valid for only 6 months. Applicants in China can take the physical examination at the international travel health care center.  

7. Certificate of Non-criminal record. The applicant shall submit a valid certificate of Non-Criminal Record issued by the local public security authority, usually issued within 6 months prior to the submission date of the application.

8. Study plan or research proposal. No less than 800 words, stating your basic personal information, hobbies and expertise, study motivation, past academic background and a study plan or research proposal in Chongqing University.

9. Financial statement or bank statement. The available balance should be no less than 40, 000RMB (The minimum amount of financial proof for full scholarship applicants may be appropriately lowered).

10. Curriculum vitae. The applicants shall submit curriculum vitae introducing your personal information, education background, work experience, research work, publications, honors, and other information, which could facilitate your application.

11. Study or Work certificate. For applicants who are currently studying or working in an institution, a Certificate of Enrollment or Employment issued by the institution is required.

13. For Arts programs, applicants must have related academic background and are required to submit the portfolio (such as paintings, story scripts, short movies, etc.).

14. Other supporting documents such as publications, awards, certificate of employment/internship, etc. (if available).

Note: 1) All the above documents should be Chinese or English version. If the original copy is in a different language, a notarized translated version in Chinese or English must be submitted together; as to the certificate issued by the school, the name and contact information of the certifier shall be affixed as well as the official seal of the school. 2) Applicants do not need to send hard copies of the above documents, but shall bring the original copies when registration

Reminder: Personal information, passport information, email address and notification receiving method are very important, please be sure to fill in correct information. Applicants will be responsible for consequences due to wrong basic information in application.


APPLICATION AND ADMISSION PROCEDURES

1. Online Application

Create and activate an account in our online application system at https://cqu.17gz.org/member/login.do. Fill in the application form and upload required supporting documents (colored scanned copy of the original version).Select he corresponding scholarship or self-funded programs according to the funding category.

Submit the application and pay the application fee (400 RMB, non-refundable). Applicants can pay through:

online payment system: Only applicable to applicants who are already in China, paying by WeChat, Alipay or bank card;

bank transfer (remark your application number on the transfer voucher and send the copy to admissions@cqu.edu.cn ASAP): the account information is as follows,




2. Evaluation and Admission

1) Initial review of qualification and documents.

2) Academic review by related schools, and interview with those who have passed the above review.

3) Send admission documents to the admitted students.

2. International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship

3. Chongqing Municipal Government Mayor Scholarship

4. Chongqing University President Scholarship

- First-class Scholarship covers tuition waiver, free on-campus accommodation, Comprehensive Medical Insurance and living allowance;

- Second-class Scholarship covers tuition fee waiver;

- Third-class Scholarship covers 50% tuition fee waiver.
