2026 Application Guide for Postgraduate Programs
for International Students
Full-time Postgraduate Education at Chongqing University:
ELIGIBILITY
1. Applicants must be Non-Chinese citizen holding valid ordinary passports, with sound physical and mental health, excellent academic performance as well as good moral character;
2. Education & Age Requirements:
Self-funded: Doctoral degree applicants must hold a Master’s degree and be under 45 years old; Master’s degree applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree and be under 40 years old.
Scholarship: Doctoral degree applicants must hold a Master’s degree and be under 40 years old. Master’s degree applicants must hold a Master’s degree and be under 35 years old.
3. Language Proficiency Requirements:
Applicants for Chinese-taught programs shall submit a valid Score Report of HSK level 5 (≥180) or other certificates demonstrating equivalent Chinese proficiency.
Applicants for English-taught programs whose native language is not English need to provide either: 1) an English language proficiency test score report (IELTS 6.0 / TOEFL Internet-Based Test (iBT) 80 or higher); 2) a certificate from their previous university proving that the previous degree was taught in English; or 3) a certificate indicating that they have studied in an English-speaking country for more than one year.
4. Applicants must not be recipients of any other scholarships at the same time.

APPLICATION MATERIALS
1. Information Page of Ordinary Passport. A valid ordinary passport is required, with an expiration date no earlier than March 2027. For applicants who are already in China, a photocopy of their Visas or Residence Permit with customs entry stamps must also be provided.
2. Notarized Highest Degree Certificate. Master’s degree applicants shall submit their Bachelor’s graduation certificate and degree diploma. Doctoral degree applicants shall submit their Master’s graduation certificate and degree diploma. Prospective graduates (who have not yet obtained their degree diplomas) shall submit a pre-graduation certificate issued by their university, and bring the official degree diploma for registration if admitted, otherwise the admission qualification will be revoked.
3. Academic Transcripts (from the undergraduate program onwards). Copies of academic records from the first to last semester during the undergraduate, graduate (if any), and doctoral programs (if any) shall be provided. These transcripts must be issued and sealed by the applicant’s university’s academic affairs office, graduate school, or student management department. Additionally, a formal explanation of the university’s academic grading system must be submitted.
4. Proof of Language Proficiency. A valid language proficiency proof (as required) must be submitted. For specific requirements, refer to Section 3 of the “Eligibility” section.
5. Two Academic Recommendation Letters in English or Chinese from professors or associate professors introducing the applicant’s academic/research background, comprehensive abilities and evaluation of future growth etc. Each letter must include the referee’s signature and contact information (academic title, email address, and phone number), and the issue date must not be earlier than January 2025.
6. Foreigner Physical Examination Form (click to download) and Attachments within a valid period of six months. The form must be completed by the physician in Chinese or English. The physical examination must cover all the items listed in the form and include the physician’s recommendation. Incomplete records or those without the signature of the attending physician, the official stamp of the hospital or a sealed photograph of the applicants are invalid. Attachments of examination results (Laboratory exam report, Electrocardiograph report and Chest X-ray report) must also be uploaded. Please carefully plan your physical examination schedule as the results are only valid for 6 months. Applicants in China may complete the physical examination at the international travel health care center.
7. Non-criminal Record Certificate. A valid certificate of Non-Criminal Record issued by the local public security authority must be submitted. The certificate shall be issued within 6 months prior to the application submission.
8. Study Plan or Research Proposal (download the template). No less than 1000 words, stating the applicant’s basic personal information, hobbies and expertise, study motivation, past academic background and a study plan or research proposal at Chongqing University.
9. Financial Statement or Bank Statement. Submit a financial proof issued within the past six months, with available funds of no less than 40,000RMB (The minimum amount of financial proof for full scholarship applicants may be appropriately lowered).
10. Curriculum Vitae. Submit a curriculum vitae introducing the applicant’s personal information, education background, work experience, research work, publications, honors, and other information to support your application.
11. Study or Employment Certificate. For applicants currently studying or working at an institution, a Certificate of Enrollment or Employment issued by the institution is required.
12. Provisional Acceptance Letter from a Supervisor of CQU (if available, not compulsory). (download the template)
13. Other supporting documents such as publications, awards, certificate of employment/internship, etc. (if available). For Arts programs, applicants must have related academic background and are required to submit the portfolio (such as paintings, story scripts, short movies, etc.).
14. Other supporting materials required by the specific program.
Note: 1) All the above documents should be in Chinese or English. If the original copy is in another language, a notarized Chinese or English translation must be submitted along with it. For university-issued certificates, the certifier’s name, contact information, and the university’s official seal must be affixed. 2) Applicants are not required to send hard copies of the above documents, but must bring the original copies for registration.
Reminder: Personal information, passport information, and email address are crucial. Please ensure that you provide accurate information. Applicants shall bear responsibility for any consequences resulting from incorrect basic information in your application.
APPLICATION AND ADMISSION PROCEDURES
1. Online Application
Create and activate an account on Chongqing University’s online application system at https://cqu.17gz.org/member/login.do. Select the corresponding scholarship or self-funded programs according to the funding category to be applied, complete the application form and upload required supporting documents (colored scanned copy of the original documents). Submit the application and pay the application fee (400 RMB, non-refundable) online before the application deadline. Applications that are unpaid or submitted after the deadline will not be reviewed. The system operation instruction is enclosed in the
attachment.
2. Evaluation and Admission
1) Initial review of qualification and documents.
2) Academic review by the relevant schools and interview for those who have passed the above review.
3) Issuance of admission documents to admitted students.

SCHOLARSHIPS INFORMATION
1. Chinese Government Scholarship
Visit the website of https://www.campuschina.org/ for more detailed information. Type A applicants may apply through dispatching authorities for overseas study of their home countries. When completing the application form, applicants must indicate “Chongqing University” as the priority institution. Type B applicants shall apply in accordance with the requirements specified in the respective program guidelines of Chongqing University.
2. International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship
Applicants need to apply through the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship Application System, as well as Chongqing University’s online application system. For detailed information, please visit the website of the Center for Language Education and Cooperation of the Chinese Ministry of Education: http://www.chinese.cn.
3. Chongqing Municipal Government Mayor Scholarship
Established by the People’s Government of Chongqing Municipality, this scholarship aims to attract outstanding international students to study in Chongqing. Applicants shall apply through Chongqing University’s online application system.
4. Chongqing University President Scholarship
Sponsored and established by Chongqing University, this scholarship supports outstanding international students in pursuing degree studies at the university. Applicants shall apply through Chongqing University’s online application system.
