Medical Insurance
The Ministry of Education of China requires all international students to be medically insured throughout their study period in China (see more details in Chinese Safety Comprehensive Insurance Plan). The medical insurance premium is 400RMB for a semester and 800RMB for a year.
-Self-financing international students, Chongqing Municipal Government Scholarship students and Chongqing University President Scholarship students must pay the insurance premium by themselves. They are allowed to register only after they have paid the insurance premium.
According to the rules of Insurance Company (China Pingan Insurance Company), the insurance plan includes accidental injury and inpatient service. Those who have purchased the insurance product can make claim to the insurance company through the International Students Office, should there be any accidents or inpatient service occurred during their stay in China. In addition, the insurance company conditionally covers outpatient service within the time frame insured, the daily limit for outpatient service is 600 RMB. The starting line for the outpatient reimbursement is 650 RMB, the insured can enjoy 85% of the amount that exceeds the starting line of 650. Any amount less than the starting line (650RMB) will not be reimbursed until the total amount reaches 650RMB.
Refer to the following cases for more details:
Case 1: Student A purchased the insurance product at 800RMB per year. He had an accidental injury during a football match and went to hospital, paying the fees by himself first. After he recovered from the injury, he brought all the receipts, invoices and relevant documents to the International Students Office (ISO) and ISO helped him to claim all his expenses from the insurance company.
Case 2: Student B also purchased the same insurance product at 800RMB per year. B caught a pneumonia and went to hospital to receive inpatient care. After he recovered, he brought all the receipts and invoices and relevant documents to the ISO and the latter helped him to claim all his expenses from the insurance company.
Case 3: Student C also purchased the insurance product with 800RMB per year. C got a serious cold and went to hospital for treatment. He paid 500RMB by himself for the outpatient treatment and medicine, and afterwards he brought all the receipts, invoices and relevant documents to ISO. As the amount of 500 this time is lower than the starting line of 650RMB, so the ISO advised him to keep the documents and wait till the amount reaches the starting line. Some weeks later, C got a headache and went to hospital again, paying 400RMB. Thus, for two visits, the total came to 900RMB, which exceeds the starting line of 650RMB set by the insurance company. ISO made the claim to the insurance company on C’s behalf, and C got the reimbursement of 212.5RMB, which is 85% of the amount of 250 (900-650).
In Case 1 and Case 2, if student A and student B were seriously injured and unable to pay treatment fee (such as 8000 or 10000RMB), they can call the insurance company at 400-810-5119 or 010-67185217 to request pre-payment of treatment fee. Please refer to the following procedures for more details:
- Call the Lianhua Guoji hotline at 400-8105119 or 010-67185217.
- Inform the ISO by phone call.
- The ISO faxes the passport page and authorization letter to the insurance company.
